KATANA Zirconia Block (Fig. 1) has hardly any features in common with the zirconia that was so popular in dental laboratories two decades ago and was used as a framework material. In many cases, this innovative zirconia serves as a functionally and aesthetically sensible alternative to high-strength glass-ceramics. Its flexural strength is higher than that of lithium disilicate, its translucency on a level with the low-translucency variant of the ceramic and its surface—if smoothly polished—antagonist-friendly, causing low wear.

A clinical examination revealed the presence of several erosive lesions that contributed to her chewing problems and had caused a decrease in enamel thickness. Ten-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate is a bit of a tongue-twister for anyone not a chemist by profession, so in everyday communication, this adhesive monomer is referred to by its three initial letters, MDP. The monomer was developed by Kuraray Noritake Dental in 1981 to improve the adhesive strength to hydroxyapatite and has proved its strength ever since. It is indispensable in dentistry. For example, reliable adhesive cementation of zirconia restorations would not be possible without MDP.

Case presentation: A male patient reported to the clinic with two discoloured composite corner build-ups on teeth #11 and #21 (Fig. 1). These vital teeth had been damaged through dental trauma in his childhood. He was not satisfied with the aesthetics of the restorations, including the overall shape and colour of these teeth. It was therefore decided to create porcelain veneers to teeth #11 and #21.
