Accelerated aligners with photobiomodulation

October 15, 2020

When I first heard about clear aligners in the early 2000s (the US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of clear aligners to straighten teeth in 1980), it must have sounded like science fiction. The fact that it was created in Silicon Valley by people who had nothing to do with the dental industry, in seeking solutions that do not require complicated appliances in the mouth, is really an incredible story.

A female patient came to Studio Cortellini in Riccione in Italy in order to improve not just her ability to chew but also the overall aesthetic appearance of her teeth. A clinical examination revealed the presence of several erosive lesions that contributed to her chewing problems and had caused a decrease in enamel thickness. This reduction in enamel, combined with a number of discoloured composite restorations, negatively affected the aesthetics of her smile.

Atraumatic extraction of maxillary second premolar

November 29, 2019

A 76-year-old female patient visited our clinic owing to pain in the left maxilla. She had a fistula in the buccal gingiva between tooth #25 and position #24. There were implants in positions #24 and 23. Tooth #25 already had a crown. The tooth had been affected by secondary caries earlier and had been repaired. A periapical radiograph showed an active inflammatory process in progress from the endodontically treated tooth that greatly worsened the prognosis and could have adversely affected the implants. The prognosis was therefore considered poor and we decided to extract the tooth.

A 75-year-old female patient visited our dental clinic reporting a loose crown on tooth #26. The tooth had been endodontically treated in the past and had a carbon-fibre post. The tooth had been prosthetically restored and presented severe caries without early apical destruction or alteration. The patient had previously had a gold crown on the tooth.

Full-mouth restoration with immediate loading in the upper jaw

October 11, 2019

Rehabilitating both jaws of a patient with a poor oral situation is already a challenge in itself. But we wanted to go even further by trying immediate loading using Straumann BLX implants, which are excellent for this kind of work because of their macro-geometry.

Correction of VDO: Fully digital workflow, integration of dental scanner, DSD and CAD/CAM

September 28, 2019

The digitalisation of the workflow in dentistry has gained ground in recent years owing to the technical advances in regards to intraoral scanning and software programmes. Here, Drs Miguel Stanley, Ana Gomes Paz, Inês Miguel, and Christian Coachman outline a correction of a patient's vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) that was conducted using a completely digital workflow.
