MOLAR HYPOMINERALIZATION

A guided tour from clinical challenge to public health opportunity

This presentation will outline "the Molar Hypomineralization problem", ranging from clinical challenges and solutions through to worldwide needs for research, education and public health management. Drawing on their experiences as (1) a pediatric dentist and dental researcher; and (2) a dentally qualified biomedical researcher, the speakers will provide a unique "translational" perspective on how the clinical and research aspects of this problem might be turned into public good. The focus will be on clinical issues, both in terms of team-based management and how clinicians can contribute to an international collaborative effort aimed at prevention. Participants will learn:
  • The under-recognised gravity of this problem which affects 1-in-6 schoolchildren and underpins vast amounts of tooth decay worldwide
  • How to use a team approach (dental professionals + family) to ensure early diagnosis and high-quality management
  • The efforts being made by an international network group to research and educate about this problem with the ultimate goal of prevention
