LONDON, U.K./ATLANTA, U.S.: After examining tooth renewal in animals that have tooth replacement and regenerative abilities, researchers from the U.K. and the U.S. identified similarities between the teeth and taste buds of a fish. The results suggest that the fish’s oral organs are able to regenerate tissue and can be manipulated to express the characteristics of different tissue types, under the regulation of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark: The authors of a recent study have investigated whether high-dose vitamin D supplementation during the third trimester of pregnancy improved the long-term oral health of offspring during childhood. AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: At the recent Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, researchers at pharmaceutical company Cortexyme announced an upcoming clinical trial that will target toxic substances released by the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis. Commonly associated with chronic periodontal disease, P. gingivalis has also been shown to have an adverse effect on Alzheimer’s disease.
Whether or not to provide dental treatment for patients with drug dependencies can be a difficult decision for dentists to make. LONDON, UK: Though the exact number of people who suffer from xerostomia is unclear, some studies estimate that as many as one in five of the population could suffer from some form of the condition. A new qualitative study has investigated the physical, emotional and social impacts of dry mouth, finding that it can lead to social anxiety, a reduced ability to eat and speak, and even a higher risk of mental illness.
LONDON, UK: The US-headquartered clear aligner provider SmileDirectClub has launched nine stand-alone stores across London, Manchester and Birmingham, its first entry into the European market. GENEVA, Switzerland: FDI World Dental Federation recently released the results of a survey that asked FDI national dental associations and national endodontic societies about the state of endodontics in their countries. The survey included a political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal (PESTEL) exercise.

RUGBY, UK: The Oral Health Foundation, a UK charity that aims at improving well-being by reducing the harm caused by oral disease, has announced clear, simple and scientifically backed guidelines on using denture adhesive. In this way, the foundation is providing uniform advice that dental professionals can give to completely edentulous patients who use denture adhesive. The guidelines were developed by a global task force and are part of a research project sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

UMEÅ, Sweden: In the largest study of its kind, researchers from the Institute of Odontology at Umeå University in Sweden and the Bristol Dental School in the UK have collaborated to get a clearer picture regarding what role our genes play when it comes to oral health. Collecting meta-data from thousands of patients, the team was able to identify 47 new genes with connections to tooth decay.

WÜRZBURG, Germany: The use of hydroxyapatite as an artificial tooth enamel to prevent erosion and even to contribute to the regeneration of natural tooth enamel has been investigated and discussed for years. However, there is still insufficient scientific evidence to prove its benefits. A recent German study has now demonstrated that hydroxyapatite for prophylaxis is as effective as fluoride.
Russian start-up 3D Smile was founded in response to a lack of software applications for aligner treatment. Marina Domracheva, the founder and CEO, personally supervised all steps of aligner production, from 3D printing and finishing of printed models to contracting dental clinics. This allowed her to quickly understand all the barriers and demands of the dental laboratory, specifically regarding the digital workflow for aligner treatment and made it possible for the company to grow into a developer of specialised software for aligner treatment. At the 2019 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in Los Angeles in the US, Theodore Aptekarev, the company’s chief technology officer, told Dental Tribune International about 3D Smile and its deep CBCT analysis software.
Dr Luis Carrière is the inventor of both the Carriere SLX Self-Ligating Bracket System and the Carriere Motion 3D Appliance. He travels the world teaching at several universities and lecturing internationally on these products and orthodontic topics. Carrière maintains a private practice in Barcelona in Spain. During the 2019 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists in Los Angeles in the US, Carrière presented three new products developed through his collaboration with Henry Schein.

Today, Swiss oral health company CURADEN is commemorating collaborator and friend Dr Jiří Sedelmayer, who passed away last week aged 73, having lived a life richly filled with research, teaching and family. A champion of prophylaxis, Sedelmayer founded the individually trained oral prophylaxis (iTOP) programme, teaching students and dental professionals correct oral care for disease prevention. His influence in dentistry cannot be overstated: together with his beloved wife, Lucie, Sedelmayer contributed to a world where dentists are teachers and patients stay healthy.
