3M is currently extending its portfolio of aesthetic orthodontic solutions. NORWICH, UK: Dr Gautam Sharma, owner of a dental practice in Norfolk, has just returned from a mission to Lebanon, where he and other volunteers provided treatment to almost 1,500 displaced Syrian and Lebanese refugees. Sharma was there as a trustee of the Dental Mavericks, a charity focused on improving access to dentistry for underprivileged communities in Morocco and its surrounds.

LONDON, UK: Two of the leading members of the British Dental Association (BDA) have been elected to serve in the FDI World Dental Federation at this year’s World Dental Congress in Argentina. Dr David Williams, Professor of Global Oral Health at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Dr Mick Armstrong, Chair of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee, have been chosen for the FDI’s Science and Dental Practice committees, respectively.

LISBON, Portugal: Previous research has shown that endodontic treatment failure in maxillary molars can result from missed second mesiobuccal (MB2) canals. However, an MB2 canal is present in as many as 95 per cent of maxillary molars. In a recent study, a group of researchers from the University of Lisbon’s dental school analysed the worldwide prevalence of the MB2 root canal to understand its possible relation to sex, age, side and root configuration.

A world-leading authority on dental implant surfaces, Prof. Ann Wennerberg, from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, recently led a systematic review of 62 clinical studies in which she analysed a total of over 17,000 implants with at least ten years of follow-up. The study compared the long-term clinical outcomes of treatment with implants with different surfaces, including sandblasted, titanium plasma-sprayed, turned, sandblasted and acid-etched, and anodised. At the 2018 EAO congress in Vienna, Dental Tribune International met with Wennerberg to discuss her research and its findings.
