BERN, Switzerland: The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) has presented its top accolade, the Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Periodontal Disease, to Dr Anton Sculean, professor and chair of the Department of Periodontology, and executive director of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

The award serves to promote and recognise outstanding achievements in research and the application of this research to the clinical study of periodontal disease. The organisers commended Sculean’s “significant contribution to the field of oral health research” when he was presented with the award on 18 March —the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IADR.

“I was deeply honoured and humbled but at the same time extremely delighted to receive the news from the IADR central office,” commented Sculean in a press release from the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). “However, in my eyes this award represents the recognition of the work of our team in Bern and also our long-lasting collaboration with outstanding colleagues and friends from various institutions in Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Romania, UK, USA, Canada, China, Italy, and Japan, because research today is impossible to be accomplished without a global and inclusive spirit encompassing a great team of highly qualified and motivated people.”

Sculean is a renowned researcher and clinician who has published widely in the field of periodontics. “His work centres on preclinical and clinical research related to periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic–aesthetic periodontal therapy, and the use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and novel approaches (such as lasers and photodynamic therapy) in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections,” the EFP said.

Sculean studied as an undergraduate at Semmelweis University in Budapest in Hungary and thereafter completed postgraduate training in periodontics at the University of Münster in Germany and the Royal Dental College in Aarhus in Denmark. He received his habilitation at Saarland University in Homburg in Germany.

Sculean was EFP president from 2018 to 2019 and is the third person to have both served on the organisation’s executive committee and received the IADR award.
