COVID-19 in 2020: Reflecting on the most difficult year in dentistry

LEIPZIG, Germany: A team of World Health Organization (WHO) researchers will head to the Chinese megalopolis of Wuhan in January to further research the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. More than 12 months after it was first reported to WHO, there is still much that we do not know about it. The virus made 2020 the most challenging year on record for dentistry. It brought equal measures of chaos and occupational and financial hardships, but dentists and the associations and companies that serve them responded with solidarity, with determination to serve patients and with resolution to stand up for dental care as an essential service.

Shocking misinformation persists in fight against HIV

EDINBURGH, UK: The chief executive of the UK’s Oral Health Foundation (OHF) told the media in November that HIV could be transmitted through the sharing of toothbrushes. His comment was later corrected, but not before it had been published on the OHF’s website and on Dentistry.co.uk. As the international community prepared to mark World Aids Day 2020, Chief Executive of HIV Scotland Nathan Sparling said that misinformation about HIV remains deep-rooted.

Interview: Corona terminator protects dental staff and patients from SARS-CoV-2

In the absence of a dental market response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Dr Mustafa Ayna, a Germany-based dentist who heads his own practice in Duisburg, decided to take action and designed a device that eliminates the SARS-CoV-2 virus before it can spread in the treatment room. In cooperation with mechanical engineer Philipp Maack from the Ruhr University Bochum and Dr Aydin Gülses of the clinic for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel in Germany, he designed the corona terminator. He hopes that the device will soon be available for other dental practices.

From saturation to dilution: Major paradigm shift for dental practice

COVID-19 has brought about radical economic and organisational changes in dental practice. For years, we have believed, and I think rightly so, that by optimising chair time, that is by making the most of the time with the patient, we would achieve maximum profitability within the boundaries set by the business model of the dental practice. Thus, we thought that using each dental unit for approximately 85% of the available time (while still leaving some space for peak time management) would result in the optimal use of the dental practice.
